Yoshiko Hall, 88, formerly of Bernville and Fleming, PA passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020 at the Phoebe Berks Health Care Center, Wernersville, PA. She was born in Takamatsu City, Shikoku Province in Southern Japan on March 26, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Sanichi and Kikue (Takamatsu) Nagaoka.
Yoshiko was a gifted runner in her youth enabling her to earn acceptance to high school and achieve a high school diploma during a time when Japanese girls’ studies typically culminated with completion of eighth grade. After high school she went on to earn a certificate in Japanese floral design. Yoshiko met her late husband, Cecil G. Hall, while working at the US Army PX on the military base where Cecil was stationed during the Korean Conflict. They dated for a couple of years before marrying on July 7, 1955 and together they shared 54 years of marriage.
A tough, tenacious perfectionist in all of her personal endeavors, Yoshiko also expected her five children to work hard and strive for excellence in all their pursuits. She was employed by the Penn State University, University Park, PA for fifteen years. The majority of her work years at Penn State were spent serving meals to the Penn State Nittany Lion Football team. Yoshiko enjoyed music, theatre, and dance. She loved to watch Disney movies and comedies. She also enjoyed viewing international championship events especially ice skating, gymnastics, and track as well as watching her favorite Nittany Lions play football. In her later life crafts and art activities gave her daily joy, and family trips to the beach or mountains were an annual highlight. Yoshiko was forever young at heart and enjoyed getting down on the floor to play dolls or cars and trucks with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will never forget her double-dimpled smile and vivacious laughter.
Yoshiko is survived by her five children: James E. Hall and wife Vickie of Huntingtown, MD; Bonnie Hall Benfer of Whitfield, PA; Peggy Pfohl McCown and husband Steve of Atlanta, GA; Robert G. Hall and wife Donna of Ponte-Vedra, FL; and David S. Hall of Newark, NJ. She is survived by her five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Grandchildren include: Amanda Bailey and husband Jonathan; Brian Pfohl and wife Bailey; Lauren Pfohl; Kelly Hall; and Peyton Hall. Great grandchildren include: Max Bailey; Emma Bailey; Leo Bailey; Brian Pfohl, Jr; Henry Pfohl; and Joseph Pfohl. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Kumiko Ishii of Toronto, Canada; and youngest sister, Sumiko Ono of Japan. She was predeceased by her three brothers Kaoru, Susumu, Seikichi; and one sister, Ayako all of Japan.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private viewing for immediate family will be held at the Bean Funeral Home 3825 Penn Ave. Sinking Spring on Wednesday, December 9, 2020. A funeral service will be held at the Wexler Funeral Home in Milesburg, PA, followed by a burial at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Julian, PA at the convenience of the family.
