Scott V. Winkleman, 64, Spring Township, passed away of natural causes on August 13, 2023, in his residence. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of Marlene L. (Wolfe) Winkleman and the late Jay V. Winkleman. He was a career educator teaching in the Central Columbia, Wilson, and Reading School Districts.
He was a graduate of Wilson High School, West Lawn, Pa, class of 1977, and a member of the swimming team and water polo team and achieved All-America honors for the latter as a senior. After high school graduation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from West Chester University and was a member of the Golden Ram swimming team. He later earned a Master of Education degree from Alvernia University and pursued a career in administration and served as an assistant principal in the Reading School District until his retirement in 2013.
Scott was the Head Coach of the Reading Red Knights swimming and water polo teams and guided several champions to successful careers. He served as a lifeguard and pool manager at the Wilshire Recreation Association for many years and was well known in the competitive swimming circles of Berks County. He was honored to be the subject of a Reading Eagle article that recounted his long affiliation with the lifeguarding community. After retirement, he managed the pool at the Body Zone for several years. He spent a lifetime teaching countless children how to swim.
Scott was a member of Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sinking Spring and served on the church council. He was an avid participant in the adult Sunday school class. In particular, he took great joy and pride in assisting with the production and sales of peanut butter and coconut eggs during the Easter fund raiser among many other church projects.
He had a passion for fly fishing and was a member of Trout Unlimited – Tulpehocken Chapter. He could often be seen on the streams of Pennsylvania enjoying this activity. He was also a dedicated road bike enthusiast and would take a 20 mile ride as a normal daily endeavor.
He is also survived by his sister, Jill A. Winkleman, Montauk, NY and his brother, Kent J. Winkleman, Spring Township. He had two nephews, Henry S. Winkleman, Columbia, NC and Jay R. Winkleman, Spring Township.
Memorial Service for Scott will be held in, Bean Funeral Home, 3825 Penn Ave. Sinking Spring, on Friday August 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow in Pleasant View Cemetery.
