Samuel E. Tyson, III, formerly of Sinking Spring, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 8:45 am in The Highlands at Wyomissing Skilled Care Unit. Sam was a resident of The Highlands since 2005, and his last days were comforted by visits from family and friends and the attendance of his loving daughter, son-in-law, and care givers.
Sam was the husband of the late Dorothy G. (Garman) Tyson who passed away December 5, 2010. He was the son of the late Samuel Elliot Tyson, Jr. and Ruth L. (Lenhart) Tyson, born September 9, 1925 in the Reading Hospital.
He graduated from Reading High School in 1942, entered Penn State as a freshman, then served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Naval Aviation Cadet in training as a Navy pilot. When the war ended, Sam returned to Penn State and received his Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgy in 1948.
He joined the metallurgical department of Carpenter Technology in 1948. For the last 16 years of his career there he was in management, serving last as General Manager of Quality Assurance. He retired in 1986. From 1993 to 2006, Mr. Tyson served as a Lead Auditor for accrediting ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems in the US and abroad. Sam also served on the A-1 and F-4 Committees of the American Society for Testing and Materials for over forty years, and was recognized with the Society's highest individual merit award for his leadership in developing and promoting voluntary consensus standards for steel, stainless steel, alloys and medical and surgical materials and devices.
Samuel is survived by his daughter Kathy Sue Tyson Davey, wife of Laurence Davey of Fairfax, Virginia and his granddaughter Maria Davey and step grandchildren Christopher and Peter Davey. Mr. Tyson is also survived by his sister Ruth (Wagner) Brodhead of Orwigsburg, PA; nephew Peter Wagner; niece Anna (Wagner) Kleckner; and was preceded in death by nephew Andrew Wagner.
Sam's loves were running, travel, nature, and, in his later years, being greeted by friends at The Highlands' welcoming fireplace. Sam ran the Harrisburg, Boston and New York City marathons. He and his wife Dottie traveled extensively and developed friendships abroad. Nothing was more special to him than visiting his sister's farm outside of Orwigsburg or spending time at Lake Wallenpaupack every August for 20 years with dear friends and their families. Also a ballroom dancer and bridge player, Sam had a rich social life over the years with many friends.
Sam was active in his community, serving on the school board, the church board, and conducting fundraising and programming for the local Penn State campus. He was a member of First Unitarian Universalist Church in Reading.
