Roland B. Mengel, 86, of Reading, passed away November 1, 2010 at 11:10 am in The Reading Hospital & Medical Center. He was the husband of Naomi R. (Wolfe) Mengel. Born in Reading he was the son of the late Herman and Sadie (Drumheller) Mengel. Mr. Mengel was a driver for dry cleaning and coffee companies for over 30 years, and was a salesman for Boscov's North and Longeneckers Clothing Store and was also employed by Rothrock and Lindgren's as a shuttle driver. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Reading and past member of the former Central Park Methodist Church. An Army verteran of WWII and recipient of a Bronze Star as Pfc., He was awarded heroism in action against the Japanese near Mt. Mataba, Luzon. A little bearer with 6th Infantry Division he saved the lives of serveral of his comrades when he advanced far beyond his battalion aide station to administer first aid to the wounded. He was a life member of American Legion Post 12 in Reading, member of Travelors Protection Association and Republican City Committeman. In addition to his wife he is survived by daughters Cynthia W. wife of Ronald P. Badinger of Muhlenberg Park, Julie L. wife of William T. Baeighkley of West Reading, Sylvia A. Boughter of New Castle, PA, son Luke A. Mengel at home, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son John B. Mengel in 1949.
