Robert (Bob) Holstead Post, 91, a longtime resident of Montvale NJ, passed away May 29, 2020 at Phoebe Berks in Wernersville, PA where he and his beloved wife of 64 years, Ruth (nee Coombs), lived for the past 11 years. He was the son of Hilda (nee Hensel) and Harold Post, loving father of Janet Post of Fort Lee, NJ (husband Kenneth Rich), Nancy Post of Abingdon, MD and Susan Post of Salem, MA. He was also the proud and beloved grandfather of three grandsons, Zachary Rich (fiancé, Kristal Passante), and Brett and Pierce Munafo. Bob was pre-deceased by his brother, Harold, and is survived his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Kolnsberg and loving nieces and nephews.
Bob was born and raised in the hamlet of Palisades, NY, where generations of Posts lived and worked. He attended the village’s two-room schoolhouse, built on land donated by his great-grandfather, until entering Tappan Zee High School in Piermont, NY. After graduating high school, Bob worked for a short time at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY, before attending the RCA Institute in New York City to pursue his talent in electronics. Bob worked for the RCA Service Company in Hackensack, NJ for 40 years, was the highly-respected local union shop steward and was elected an officer of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Bob and Ruth were active members of the Pascack Reformed Church in Park Ridge, NJ, for three decades. Bob volunteered his talent as a jack-of-all-trades, helping to fix or improve the church property. He was known as an ingenious “Mr. Fix-it” and was sought out by many to repair or build just about anything, from cars and electronics to building new rooms. He was happiest when outdoors taking care of his one-acre yard, chickens, building walls, planting flowers, and cutting the grass. He spent countless hours with his daughters playing softball, basketball, ping-pong, croquet and badminton and coached their team to a first-place victory in softball. Bob loved history, reading, bowling, sports, feeding the birds and taking the family on vacations to places like Gettysburg and Williamsburg. Bob and Ruth retired to Ocean Pines, MD in 1996 and enjoyed a long and comfortable retirement. They spent many happy years traveling with their dog and cat throughout the U.S. in their RV and enjoyed trips to Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. They especially loved camping at Rollins Pond State Park in the Adirondacks.
Bob will be remembered for his warm smile, down-to-earth disposition, genuine kindness and leading by example. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and was deeply appreciative when others showed him the same kindness. He was a gentle giant who will be missed terribly, but his love and devotion to friends and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family followed by cremation. His daughters will hold a service of remembrance in New Jersey when the current health situation permits. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pascack Reformed Church, 65 Pascack Rd, Park Ridge, NJ 07656; the Palisades Cemetery Association, PO Box 1, Palisades NY 10964 or the American Bird Conservancy (www.abcbirds.org).
