Richard Miller

Richard W. Miller, 86, of Wernersville, passed away Friday, November 11, 2016 at 6:40 PM in Phoebe Berks Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Gladys H. (Boyer) Miller who passed away October 13, 2016. Born in Reading, Mr. Miller was the son of the late Ira W. and Alma Mae (Updegrave) Miller. He was a member of Community Evangelical Church in Sinking Spring and was a graduate of Reading High School, Lebanon Valley College where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree and Temple University with a Masters Degree in Education. Mr. Miller served in the United States Navy. In 1953 he entered Officers Candidate School then served on LST-516 as Engineering Officer from 1954-1956 in Korea and Vietnam, retiring from the Naval Reserves in 1990 with the rank of Commander.
He was a music teacher in the Wilson School District, Guidance Counselor in the Reading School District, and retired in July of 1988 as Director of Pupil Services in the Reading School District. Mr. Miller served on the Board of Directors of the Boys Home of Reading, the Children's Home of Reading as Chairman, Berks County Children and Youth Services and was a longtime Director of Music at St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Reading.
He is survived by his children Jeffrey S. Miller, husband of Kathleen M. of Cumru Township, Stephen R. Miller, husband of Sue of Douglas, Georgia, and Julie M. Latzgo, wife of Philip F. of Robeson Township. He is also survived by grandchildren Kristin, Erin, and Jordan and his great granddaughter Alexis. Mr. Miller is also survived by his sister Betty V. Rentschler of Bern Township and was preceded in death by his brothers Robert and Lewis Miller.
Celebration of Life Service will be held in Community Evangelical Church 51 Green Valley Road, Sinking Spring, PA 19608 Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:00AM. Reverend Michael Snedeker will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be held privately by the family in Charles Evans Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in Community Evangelical Church Wednesday from 10:00-11:00AM.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Children's Home of Reading 1010 Centre Ave. Reading, PA 19601 in memory of Mr. Richard W. Miller.
