Raymond Melcher, Sr

Raymond H. Melcher, Sr., 81, formerly of Cumru Township, passed away October 8, 2010 at 8:03 pm in the residence of his daughter, Lynne M. wife of Craig N. Rentschler of Shoemakersville. He was a loving husband to the late Ruth A. (Ormsbee) Melcher to whom he was married in 1949 and who died January 3, 2009. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Clarie (Huyett) Melcher. Mr. Melcher was a 1947 graduate of Reading High School. He was employed by the former Kott's Bakery from 1942-1954 as a baker and driver/sales. He was then employed by former Schofer's Bakery in sales from 1954-1961. Later he was employed by Maier's Bakery from 1961-1991 in sales and supervisor of bread production. He retired in 1991. Mr. Melcher took many courses in Sales and Bread and Roll production and was recognized as Salesman of the Year in Bakery Sales in 1967 from the Sales and Marketing Club of Reading. Coming from a long line of accomplished musicians, Mr. Melcher was a drummer who played with Fred Portelli Orchestra from 1945-1950, then formed his own band Swing Masters performing from 1950-1956 and also performed with many local bands including the Royal Barons. He was a life member of Oakbrook Fire Company, a member of Adamstown VFW and a member of Victor Emmanuel II. He was also very active in the Maier's Bakery Retirees Association. He was a loving father to Raymond H. Melcher, Jr. of Sinking Spring and Lynne M. wife of Craig N. Rentschler with whom he last resided. He was a loving grandfather to Stephen Schwank, Patrick Melcher, Kelly Piotrkowski, Timothy Melcher and a loving great grandfather to James Schwank, Madison Petery, Courtney Melcher, Joseph Piotrkowski and Kendall Melcher. Also surving are his siblings, David H. and Robert H. Melcher both of Reading and Marjorie Owens and Marilyn Gross both of St. Lawrence.
