Olan B. Lowrey, 78 passed away April 22, 2009 at 2:10pm at his home in Limekiln, PA following a lengthy illness. Born on May 11, 1930 in Plainview, Texas he was the youngest son of the late George Andrew A. Lowrey, Sr. and Elizabeth Woodson (Kelly) Lowrey.
After his graduation from Austin High School. Mr. Lowrey entered Southwest Texas University where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1949. He went on to earn his Master's degree from the University of Iowa before enlisting in the Army, serving as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War. Upon his discharge in 1953, Mr Lowrey enrolled in Baylor University School of Law in Waco, Texas where he was editor-in-cheif of the Law Review, President of the Student Bar and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, graduated magna cum laude and received the highest grade given on the Texas Bar. He continued post graduate work in international law at Trinity College. Upon his return from England, Mr. Lowrey became an associate with the New York law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood. He then joined the Houston firm of Fulbright and Jarowski in their trial division. After a career as a partner and trial attorney, Mr. Lowrey taught law, specializing in Environmental Law and Land Use. He was Professor Emeritus of the Beasely School of Law at Temple University and authored a number of books published in the areas of Land Use and Real Estate Law. Further, along with public service litigation, he was involved in numerous public service aspects as member of the Board of Review for "National Land Use and Environmental Review", consultant for the Land Use Task Force, consultant for the Appalachian Trail Committee and as an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.
Dividing his time between his farm in Limekiln, PA and his home in Pottersville, NY, he enjoyed travel and was an accomplished scuba diver. In retirement he continued to be active in several land preservation projects, Rotary International, The Civil War Perservation Trust and was a member of Gov. Joseph Hiester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is predeceased by his brothers, William Kelly Lowrey and George Andrew Lowrey, Jr. and his first wife Margot Jeanne Lowrey.
Mr. Lowrey is survived by his wife of 21 years, Millicent E. La Roque Lowrey; two nephews, Patrick Bruce Lowrey and his wife Cheryl of Virginia Beach, VA and David Wayne Lowrey of Eugene, OR and Dallas TX; a niece Tina Marie (Lowrey) Shrum and her husband L.J. of San Antonio, TX; a great niece and nephew, Erin Marie Lowrey and Patrick Duncan Lowrey; as well as cousins Rev. Olan Bullard and his wife Mildred of Sherman, TX; Jo Ruth (Lowrey) Lisle of Rule, TX and Louceil (Doak) Hamilton of Bastrop, TX
