Marilyn Nye

September 22, 1931 — October 7, 2017

After a vibrant life as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and teacher Marilyn Ann Nye, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Berks Heim.
Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Muriel (Helfrick) Smeltz, and a graduate of Kutztown University. She was a member of St. Marks UCC, Reading.
After starting her family Marilyn returned to Kutztown University, where she received her Master Degree in Elementary Education. She retired from the Schuylkill Valley School District where she was a second and third grade teacher for many years.
Marilyn enjoyed reading, she especially enjoyed reading the Reading Eagle daily. She traveled, over the years, visiting all 48 contiguous states. Also she would attend lectures and volunteer at the Reading Pubic Museum or teach about raptors at Hawk Mountain. An avid card player, she especially enjoyed playing pinochle with her friends. After retiring Marilyn would spend many days fishing at Blue Marsh Lake.
Marilyn is survived by two children: David R. Nye husband of Janice, Charming Forge, Thomas E. Nye husband of Vickie, Bernville. Other survivors include a brother Robert Smeltz, Reading, 4 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
Marilyn's family would like to express their utmost gratitude to Berks Heim's staff for their care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held at Bean Funeral Home, 3825 Penn Ave., Sinking Spring, on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 11:00. Family and friends may call Friday October 13, 2017 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the funeral home. Marilyn will be laid to rest in Pleasant View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Marilyn's name to the Reading Pubic Museum, 500 Museum Road, Reading, Pa.
