Marian Anderson

August 12, 1917 — August 21, 2010

Marian K. (Burkert) Potteiger Anderson, 93, formerly of Shillington, passed away peacefully August 21, 2010, in the home of her son, Lyle W. Anderson of Spring Twp.


Marian was predeceased by her first husband Norman R. Potteiger on December 11, 1943; her second husband Harry W. Anderson on June 6, 1997 and her son Barry L. Potteiger on August 13, 1999.


Marian was born down on the farm in Poplar Neck (Cumru Twp.) on August 12, 1917 to the late Bertha L. (Hook) Burkert and the late Elmer H. Burkert. She was also predeceased by a brother Ellsworth D. Burkert in 2009.


Marian was a 1935 graduate of Shillington High School.


She was employed by the former Pomeroy's at 6th & Penn Streets in Reading in the Foundations department during the 1960's. She then worked as a kitchen helper and cashier in the Governor Mifflin Junior High School cafeteria in Shillington, retiring in 1987 to give loving care to her disabled son, Barry, until his death in 1999.


Marian was a member in Immanuel United Church of Christ and it's predecessor Immanuel Evangelical Reformed Church, Shillington, where she sang in the church choir, helped in the kitchen during fund raising events and taught Sunday School for many years.


Marian is survived by her daughter Diane P. (Potteiger) Kelly wife of Robert C. Kelly of Exeter Twp.; her son Lyle W. Anderson husband of Barbara A. (Ziolkowski) Anderson of Spring Twp.; three grandchildren Stephen W. Anderson of Bern Twp., Erin J. Anderson of Sinking Spring and Jason L. Anderson of Spring Twp. and two step grandchildren Colin Kelly of Madison Wisconsin and Megaen Kelly of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; 7 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren and a step sister Hilda Weller of Spring Twp.


Marian was also a charter member of the Berks County Association of Retarded Citizens, serving as secretary of that organization.
