Lydia Lees Hoffman (neè Eyre) passed from death into life on February 22nd. She was the daughter of Robert Whitehead Eyre and Lydia Argoe Eyre of Philadelphia. Lydia was also the direct descendant of several Revolutionary War patriots, including Jacob Wagner, who was the personal secretary of Presidents Jefferson and Adams.
Lydia met the love of her life, Harry, the summer before 4th grade in a music camp. He came home that night and told his parents there was “a cute little girl with chubby cheeks and braids playing the clarinet who couldn’t play a note.” Harry & Lydia have been together ever since.
In her early years, Lydia was a tomboy to her core, climbing every tree in Havertown! She never missed an opportunity to be outdoors. This served her well when she became the mother of three rambunctious boys.
Lydia adored music! While at Drexel University, she was a member of the honor society for performing arts, Pi Nu Epsilon. She also sang with the Drexel Varsity Singers. Her group was chosen as the U.S. entry for the Cork International Choral Festival in Ireland.
The true passion of Lydia’s life was working with children. She started Good News Club meetings in her home shortly after getting married and didn’t stop working till the pandemic of 2020. She taught three generations of kids through Child Evangelism Fellowship. She also worked with Pioneer Girls for decades. When she became a grandmother late in life at the age of 70, Lydia delighted in sharing Christ with her grandkids. She was the best G-mom ever!
Everyone who knew Lydia will miss the many cards she would send for every possible occasion, birthday or holiday.
Left to miss her fiercely are her husband, Harry; sons David, Mark (Helene), Paul (Sarah), four devoted grandchildren, her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Thorndike (Richard), nieces and nephews, and hundreds of people whose lives she’s touched over the decades.
A memorial will be held at Calvary Baptist, 510 Park Ave, Reading, PA 19611 at 12:30 PM on Friday, March 1st. Visitation will be beforehand at 11 AM. The burial will be held the following day in a small family service at Memory Gardens in Ephrata.
