Leroy Wingert

LeRoy Michael Wingert, 81, passed away peacefully with his loving wife Anna L. (Williams) Wingert at his side on Friday, March 16, 2018 in his home. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Mathias S. and Marie E. (Schollenberger) Wingert. He was a 1954 graduate of Ontelaunee High School then enlisted in the service and proudly served in the United States Army Signal Corps in the Korean War. He was employed at Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent Technologies for 37 years and participated as a sharpshooter in the AT&T gun club. Flying Airplanes was a passion and he obtained four levels of aviation ratings. His many hobbies included astronomy beginning as a teenager and as an adult built several telescopes including grinding the lenses with the help of his sons small hands. He enjoyed hunting, both with his rifles and archery which he did with his wife. Collecting model trains and attending many train shows with his friends was an important hobby. With his sons encouragement he expanded his HAM radio passion to obtain his operator's license and was a member of the Reading Radio Club serving as a board member for several years. His greatest enjoyment was to work in his yard and to use his hands for construction, building a garage and several additions on their home. He built a unique two story Victorian play house for his loving granddaughter Tamara , whom he raised. Vacations included a trip to Europe and many states but he mostly enjoyed camping with their tent or the RV. He always enjoyed the long telephone conversations with his good friend Dan. With his sons he was involved with Cub pack 538 for many years serving as cub master. Mr. Wingert was a member of Zion (Spies) Evangelical Lutheran Church. In addition to his wife Anna he is survived by his sons Mick S. Wingert of Rhoad Island and David B. Wingert of Reading; his granddaughter Tamara L. Bitting of Reading and his sister Maxine L. Rising, wife of Anthony Rising of Maryland and his two nephews.
Funeral Service will be held in Zion (Spies) Evangelical Lutheran Church 310 Spies Church Road, Reading, PA 19606 Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11:00 am. Reverend Dr. Anja ANicole Stuckenberger will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Alsace Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in Bean Funeral Home , North 16th & Rockland Streets, Hampden Heights Thursday, March 22, 2018 from7:00-9:00 pm and in Zion (Spies) Evangelical Lutheran Church Friday 10:00-10:45 am. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Zion (Spies) Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund at the above address in memory of Mr. LeRoy Michael Wingert.
