Leonard Charles Yerger, 79, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021, at The Lutheran Home of Topton. Born in Schuylkill Haven, Leonard was the son of the late Edwin P. and Myrtle E. (Kistler) Yerger. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen L. (Youse) Yerger.
Along with his wife, Mr. Yerger is survived by daughters Barbara Weston, wife of Carl Weston, of Fleetwood, PA and Marsha Emch, wife of Jerry Emch, of Ashburn, VA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Matthew Weston, husband of Steevi Weston, Mark Weston, Rachel Emch and Elizabeth “Elie” Emch.
Leonard proudly served in The United States Air Force, also taking classes at the University of Maryland. He then went on to Berean Bible School and Nyack College and earned a B.A. Degree in Sociology. He worked at The PA Department of Labor and Industry Office of Vocational Rehabilitation as a counselor and employer representative for 33 years. Prior to that he worked at Wernersville State Hospital with adolescents as an Activities Leader and was a very successful salesman at the Fuller Brush Company. Mr. Yerger loved God and shared Jesus’ love with those he met. He was very active in his church serving as a Sunday School teacher for 35 years, a member of the Board of Elders, a youth leader and member of the choir at Grace Bible Fellowship Church. He also enjoyed organizing church volleyball games and devotionals for local youth and adults. He was the Secretary of the La Roca de Reading Church board and Vice President of Berks County Child Evangelism Fellowship.
Mr. Yerger loved to help others. He enjoyed spending time with his family, growing the best fruits and vegetables in his many gardens and playing very competitive ping pong, tennis and volleyball. One of his all-time favorite activities was riding the ocean waves on his raft/body board in Ocean City, NJ and Myrtle Beach, SC. If he wasn’t at the beach, then he was vacationing in Florida, especially Walt Disney World to ride all the great rides and to visit the animals at Sea World.
A funeral service will be held at Grace Bible Fellowship Church, 1128 Hampden Blvd, Reading, PA, on Friday, March 26, 2021, at 11am, followed by interment at Laureldale Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in church from 10:15 - 10:45 a.m. on Friday, March 26th and also in Bean Funeral Home and Cremation Services, North 16th Street and Rockland Streets on Thursday, March 25, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Grace Bible Fellowship Church Missions Fund, 1128 Hampden Blvd., Reading, PA 19604.
