Local and Beloved Businessman Passes
Leaves Behind a 45+ Year Legacy
Laurence D. "Larry" Spayd, 77, of Alsace Township, passed away Sunday evening, October 8, 2017 in Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Maryland. Larry is survived by his loving wife Robin C. (Lilley) Spayd. Born in Reading, Larry was the son of the late Harry D. and Mildred S. (Werner) Spayd. He was the owner of V&S Sandwich Shop, 9th & Union Streets in Reading, which was his pride and joy in life for over 45 years. His children shared in his passion for the business throughout his ownership and his legacy continues on today. Larry was a classic car enthusiast and won multiple trophies at local shows with his 1971 Cottonwood Green Chevelle. He enjoyed watching glove boxing on television, listening to oldies music and vacationing with his family on the shores of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his constant furry companion, Cesar the Morkie.
Family was very important to Larry and in addition to his wife Robin, he was a loving father to Laurence D. "Larry" Spayd, Jr. of Reading; Vicki L. Ullmann, wife of Bill Ullmann of Salem, Virginia; Cindy L. Burke, wife of Joseph Burke of Muhlenberg Township; David A. Spayd, husband of Kelly Jones of Exeter Township and Lisa R. Herb, wife of Richard Herb of Pottstown. He was a loving grandfather to Raymond and wife Carolyn; Jaron; Laurence, III and wife Bobbi; Christopher; Daniel; Rebecca; Maria and wife Danielle; Jessica and husband Key; Maddison; Collin; Morgan and Mindy and a loving great grandfather to Julia, Landin and Gabriel. Larry is also survived by his dear friends Marjorie and Jim Garman of Exeter Township and preceded in death by his brother Franklin G. Spayd.
Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held in Bean Funeral Home, North 16th & Rockland Streets, Hampden Heights, Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 4:00 pm. Amy S. Landis, Certified Celebrant will officiate. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive relatives and friends in Bean Funeral Home Saturday 2:00-4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 in memory of Mr. Laurence D. Spayd.
