Joyce N. Dickerson, 89, formerly of Lincoln Park, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 28, 2018 in Londonderry Village, Palmyra. She died doing what she loved, volunteering her time and playing the piano. She was known by many for her joyous laughter, ease of conversation, her service to others, her green thumb and of course, piano playing. She loved spending time with her extended family and friends, including still regularly meeting with high school and nursing school classmates. She loved to be outdoors and taking walks in the woods, especially in Mt. Gretna which was a special place for her and her family.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Donald W. Hess who passed away in 1962 and her second husband William J. Dickerson who passed away April 30, 2011. Born in Lebanon, Mrs. Dickerson was the daughter of the late Harold W. and Beatrice S. (Steckbeck) Black. She was a 1946 graduate of Hershey High School and a 1949 graduate of Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Dickerson was employed by Dr. Schaebler and Dr. Hassler in Lincoln Park as a registered nurse for 20 years retiring in 1991. She was a longtime parishioner at West Lawn United Methodist Church and more recently First United Methodist Church in Hershey. She played piano for West Lawn United Methodist Church Sunday School for 20 years; was a life member of Lancaster General Hospital Nurses Alumni Association; volunteered playing piano at Manor Care Health Services in Sinking Spring and West Reading and enjoyed singing and playing piano with "Joyful Sounds" group at Londonderry Village. Mrs. Dickerson is survived by her children LeAnn J. Rock, wife of Alan A. Rock of Shermans Dale, PA; Dr. Donald W. Hess, husband of Jan Hess of Williamsport; Barry D. Hess of Mount Gretna and Dr. Keith S. Dickerson, husband of Teresa Dickerson of Grand Junction, Colorado and her 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Richard W. Black of Campbelltown, PA and her loving companion of 6 years John Hoerner of Hershey. She was preceded in death by her brother Dr. Samuel H. Black.
Memorial Service will be held in First United Methodist Church 64 West Chocolate Ave. Hershey, PA Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00 am. Reverend Clyde H. DeShong, III will officiate. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Pleasant View Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in First United Methodist Church Saturday 10:00-11:00 am. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Fund at Londonderry Village, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra, PA 17078 in memory of Mrs. Joyce N. Dickerson.
