Joseph Schmidt

May 16, 1923 — February 14, 2010

Joseph Schmidt, 86, of Wernersville, formerly of Muhlenberg Twp., passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at Phoebe Berks.


Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Anna (Czecs) Schmidt. For 64 years, he was the loving husband of Marion I. (Rawlings) Schmidt.


He was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School, and a graduate of Tufts University in Medford, MA, with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II, and attended Tufts under the Navy's V-12 program. He was commissioned into the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps and served as an active reservist for over 30 yrs., attaining the rank of Captain before retiring in 1983.


He was the president of E.J. Breneman from 1971 to his retirement in 1989 after a 40 year career. During those years his service to the community and profession included terms as President of the Berks County Conservancy, chairman of the Muhlenberg Twp. Parks and Recreation Board, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Stone Assoc., board member of Community General Hospital, member of the Muhlenberg Rotary Club, and former Scout Master.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons: Roger J., husband of Etta Schmidt of Leesport, Larry R., husband of Cheryl Schmidt of Palmyra; and a daughter: Ann M. Schmidt of Wernersville.


There are also six grandchildren: Andrew, Matthew, and Amy Schmidt, Jennifer Hodges, Amanda Weidner, and Adam Schmidt; and a great granddaughter: Tiana Hodges.


There is also one brother: Lawrence Schmidt of Sinking Spring.
