John S. Davies, 83, formerly of Bernville, passed away March 29, 2010 in the Highlands at Wyomissing. He was the husband of Marguerite E. (Sprankle) Davies, also deceased.
He graduated from Wilson High School and Gettysburg College and served in the US Navy during World War II.
Mr. Davies spent more than 20 years as a public school teacher in both the Kutztown and Wilson school districts. In 1974, he changed careers and served for 18 years in the Pennsylvania House Representatives, serving the people of the 129th district in western Berks County until 1992.
He served as chairman of the House Education Committee and was a member of the State Board of Education. As a State Representative, he strove to place the common good and sound constitutional principles ahead of partisan politics when considering legislation. He remained politically active until the end of his life as a Republican Committeeman.
Surviving are a son Michael J. Davies, husband of Patricia L. Davies of Middletown; a daughter Lynn M. (Davies), wife of Dr. Fred Himmelstein of West Chester; and three grandchildren Lauren M. Davies, Samantha Himmelstein and Nicole Himmelstein. He was predeceased by a grandson Benjamin Himmelstein.
