John Couden Sr

John Rudolph Couden Sr., 84, of Catawissa, formerly of Cumru Twp., ended his life journey on November 28, 2008 at Maria Hall Hospice, Danville, PA, where he was lovingly cared for the six weeks prior to his passing.

Born in Pleasant Valley, DE, he was the son of the late James F. Couden and Kathryn M. (Johnson) Couden, and step son of the late Oscar Stevens.

He married his childhood sweetheart Alberdina Stagg in 1946. They had a loving and devoted marriage of 60 years, until she passed away in 2007.

He retired from Georgia Pacific in Reading as maintenance supervisor/troubleshooter after 40 yrs. of service.

He was a US Navy Veteran during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a sonar man and instructor, attaining the rank of 1st class petty officer. He was a life member of the American Legion.

Mr. Couden was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Grill, where he served on Church Council and various committees. He would often pick up the widows in the community in his Caravan, to take them to church. He was also a former president of the Choir, and was nicknamed, Lawn Ranger, as he took care of the landscaping.

He was a league bowler for many years, as part of the American Bowling Conference, traveling all over the U.S. until 1969.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed professional football, especially the cheerleaders. He was known for his quick wit and being fun loving, and for doing whatever he did, full tilt.

He was lovingly called Mr. Pop by the people that knew him.

He is survived by his son: John Jr. and his wife Norma of Union Hall, VA; daughter: Shirr and her husband Paul Keithan of Catawissa, PA, with whom he and his wife had resided.

He is also survived by three grandsons: Matt Couden of Union Hall, VA; Jeff Couden and his wife Haoli of Quincy, MA; and Justin Keithan, York, PA; one great grandson: Caleb Cedeno, Benton, PA.

There is also a niece, Kathryn Couden of Bayside, NY, who referred to Mr. Couden as Uncle Dad; and three first cousins and their spouses.

Mr. Couden, per his wishes, will have his body donated to science. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date by the family.
