Joan Burkman

Joan L. (Mountz) Burkman, 77, of Reading, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, at Berks Heim. Born in Reading on February 14, 1939, she was daughter of the late Charles Mountz and the late Mary (Nuss) Mountz. She was wife of Clifford P. Burkman, celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary on November 25th.
She is survived by three sons: Michael, husband of Michelle (Holland), of Blandon, PA; Thomas, of Reading; and James, husband to Melinda (Smith), of Laureldale, PA. She was a proud and loving grandmother (a.k.a. Nanny) to four and great grandmother to six.
Also surviving are brothers, Ronald Mountz, Charles Mountz and sisters, Florence (Jean) Turrisi, Margaret Burkman, Dawn Koble, Janice Reed, and Donna Lutz. She was pre-deceased by brothers, Clarence Nuss, Harold Nuss and Laroy Mountz and a sister Patricia Ouellette.
She was a 1956 graduate of Reading High School and worked for Berks Auto Ignition for 28 years before retiring in 1999.
She served in the Spring Township Lioness Club for many years serving multiple terms as President and Secretary. She received numerous awards in the Lioness organization including the recipient of the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation's award for humanitarian service. She also served in many other local community ventures, helping wherever the need might be.
She spent time each year at Tuckahoe Acres Camping Resort in Dagsboro, DE where she enjoyed socializing with friends and family, playing Bingo and serving in many community activities. She also enjoyed bowling.
Memorial Service will be held in Bean Funeral Home, North 16th & Rockland Streets, Hampden Heights, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 3:30pm. Reverend Dr.Timothy R. Valentino will officiate. The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm. Online condolences may be made at www.beanfuneralhomes.com
