James M. Potter, 90, of Reading passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023 in his home. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Bessie (Liever) and Abraham Potter. James was the beloved husband of Jean L. (Becker) Potter and together they shared close to 60 years of marriage. James received his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif based on his academic excellence and was a member of the Law Review. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Judge Advocate General Corp as a 1st Lieutenant. James was a founding partner of the Reading law firm Liever, Hyman, & Potter where he practiced until he retired at age 82. He was a well-respected and active member of the legal community, serving as the President of the Berks County Bar Association in 1985 and on the Civil Rules Committee. James was an avid golfer and a jazz aficionado.
In addition to his wife Jean, James is survived by his daughters, Amy Dietrich, wife of Randy of Exeter and Leslie Kaltenbach, wife of Rich of Berkeley Heights, NJ. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Kathryn Buniski and Charlotte, Sophie, and Mathis Kaltenbach. James is preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Potter.
