James A. "Jesse" Ervin, 84 of Wyomissing, passed away peacefully Saturday February 12, 2011, in the Reading Hospital where he was a patient since Feb.6th.
He was the husband of Fern L. (Foreman) Ervin to whom he was married for 56 years.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Roy and Grace (Ammon) Ervin.
Mr. Ervin was a 1944 graduate of Reading High School. He received a BS from Albright College, where he played baseball and basketball and he received an MS from Temple University. He served in the United States Army during peacetime.
Mr. Ervin was in the teaching profession for 36 years. He began his career with the Boyertown School District as a social studies teacher. He then taught at Southwest Jr. High School as a social studies and wood shop teacher. Before retiring in 1988, Mr. Ervin was a safety education teacher at Reading High School for 20 years where he also coached the boys soccer team for several years.
Mr. Ervin was a past player of the Reading Amerks soccer team. He was a past PIAA Berks County basketball official. He was a life member of the Berks Chapter PA Sports Hall of Fame and the Reading & Berks Basketball Old-Timers.
Surviving in addition to his wife Fern, is a daughter: Barbara J. (Ervin) wife of Richard Debiec of Wernersville and a son: James M. husband of Nicole Ervin of Exeter Twp. There are 2 Grandchildren: James Debiec and Alec Ervin. Mr. Ervin was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Dorothy Jaworski and Marion Specht and a brother: Robert Ervin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
