Irvin Unger

March 16, 1917 — February 16, 2010

Irvin Leroy Unger, 92, of The Highlands at Wyomissing and formerly North Whitfield, passed away February 16, 2010. He was the husband of Virginia (Stephan) Unger who passed away September 22, 1990. Born in Penn Twp. on March 16, 1917, he was the youngest son of the late Edward B. and Rebecca P. (Rahn) Unger.


He was a 1936 graduate of Bernville High School and learned the machinist trade at Wyomissing Polytec while working days at Textile Machine Works. He later was employed as a machinist by CarTech Corp. for 22 A½ years retiring in 1982. Irvin was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn where he once served as treasurer of the Sunday School. He played semipro baseball in Leesport and softball for Wyomissing and West Wyomissing Fire Companies. He also umpired softball in the Textile and Berkshire Softball Leagues. An avid bowler, he won trophies in several senior national individual and team tournaments.


Surviving are 2 sons David S. Unger of Leesport and Dennis L. Unger husband of Christine (Kinzer) Unger of Robesonia, and a daughter Cherylin C. Unger of Exeter Twp., a grandson, 2 step granddaughters, a great grandson, 2 step great granddaughters and one step great grandson. He was predeceased by 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
