Harvey Hilbert

Harvey W. Hilbert, 93, formerly of 1134 North 13th Street, Reading, passed away August 27, 2009 at 4:50 am in Mifflin Center a resident since January 31, 2009. He was the husband of the late Elva M. (Breisch) Hilbert who passed away January 24, 1993. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Harvey B. and Cecelia M. (Sheetz) Hilbert. Mr. Hilbert was a graduate of Reading High School class of January 1934, attended classes at Penn State Berks Campus for 2 years and took courses at the University of Oklahoma and University of Virginia. He began working for the Postal Service as a substitute clerk at 5th and Washington Streets, became a regular clerk, then foreman, then assistant superintendent of Postal Station at 5th and Richmond Streets, then assistant supervisor at Main Office, then Director of Operations. Was commissioned Postmaster in July of 1974 and retired July 14, 1978. He was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, were he served on church council for 6 years, sang in the choir for 25 years, was a Sunday School teacher for many years and 1st Lay Reader at church. Mr. Hilbert was a past president of Northeast Reading Rotary Club form 1989-1990, past director of T.P.A., served on the board of Lutheran Inner Mission Society for 6 years, was secretary and president of Post Office Clerks and president of Postal Supervisors. He was a Army Air Corp veteran of WWII serving as a Medical Administrative Specialist. Mr. Hilbert was preceded in death by his son William R. Hilbert April 20, 1995 and his brothers Lester L. and Warren f. Hilbert along with his sister Florence M. Wails. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Linda M. (Hawman) Hilbert of Louisville, Kentucky and several nieces and nephews.
