Harry G. Dunkelberger, Jr., passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on 9/3/2015 at the age of 92. He was married for over 70 years to Esther M. (Becker) Dunkelberger. Born in Reading he was preceded in death by his parents Harry G., and Ella M. (Templin) Dunkelberger. Surviving in addition to his wife are children Dana G. Dunkelberger, husband of Judith, Gilbert, SC; Robin L. Naugle, wife of Harry E., Fleetwood; Richard L. Dunkelberger, husband of Marcy, West Reading; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and sister Jane Bourquin, NJ.
Harry graduated from Reading High in 1940 and Wyomissing Polytech Institute where he finished his machinist trade, - later to become a Penn State Alumni. He was a proud Marine for four years and served in WWII in the South Pacific. After the war he was employed for 18 years by Textile Machine Works, later moving on to Western Electric, and earning an Associate Engineeering degree through Penn State Berks. Harry retired after 26 years from Lucent Technologies.
Harry loved outdoor activities, ice skating, trail blazing, and especially skiing in the winter and canoeing in the summer until the age of 88. Some of the many activities he was involved in were as a volunteer ski instructor for Special Olympics, a Scoutmaster for Hampden Heights, and a P.I.A.A. Swimming Official for school swim meets. He was a ski instructor for and member of the Flying Dutchman Ski Club. Harry also was a loyal Blood Bank Donor as a 12 gallon honoree. He was a proud member of the Penn State Alumni Association and enjoyed watching Penn State football.
Harry was an active member of St. Paul's E. C. Church which later merged into Community Evangelical Church, Sinking Spring. He served the church faithfully over the years in many official and volunteer capacities and enjoyed playing the trumpet during church services and singing in the choir and as a member of the Men's Chorus.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30-11:00 at Community Evangelical Church, 51 Green Valley Road, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, Wednesday, September 9, 2015. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00am with the Rev. Michael Snedeker officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in Laureldale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Harry's memory to the Community Evangelical Church.
