George Stauffer

George E. Stauffer, 96, of Exeter Twp., passed away peacefully on November 20, 2016 at his residence in Elmcroft of Reading.
Born on July 18, 1920 in Pittsburg, he was the son of the late Maurice S. and Mary F. (Webb) Stauffer.
George graduated from William Penn High School in 1938, and began working for Bell Telephone.
George married Dinty (Boland) Stauffer on Valentine's Day in 1942. They were married for 69 years before Dinty's death in 2011.
During WWII, George served on a B-24 Liberator. The plane was shot down and he became a POW. His memoirs of this time were recorded by the Lehigh Valley History Project and have been read into the congressional record. Returning to Bell Telephone after his military service, George worked for 40 years for his only employer, retiring in 1980.
Leisure time was devoted to his wife and family, as well as his favorite hobby, bowling. George and Dinty were also known for their lovely and elegant dancing.
Volunteer work was an important part of life as well. Together George and Dinty serves in various school and church organizations. They were volunteers of the year for Keystone Blood Bank and candidates for The Jefferson Award.
After his wife's death, George continue volunteer work at the Veterans Affairs Office in Reading, where he was honored in 2014 with the Community Hero Award by the Red Cross.
George is survived by his 3 daughters: Deatra Quell, wife of Ronald, Gabrielle "Wink" Dietrich, wife of Terrence, and Darcye Morawski, widow of Frank Morawski. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and brother: Max Schulkins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Veterans Helping Veterans.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. John Baptist de LaSalle RCC, 42 Kerrick Road, Shillington, on Friday, November 25, 2016 at 10:00AM by Fr. Richard Clement. The family will receive friends and relatives at church on Friday from 9-9:50AM. The interment will follow the service at Rolling Green Memorial Park in Camp Hill.
