George Edward Charles Evans, DO, 79, of Leesport, PA and Jensen Beach, FL, died in his home of pancreatic cancer on January 16, 2010.
Born in Cleveland, OH, he was the son the late Fred C. and Laura M. (nee Knoll) Evans. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and longtime loving husband of 55 years to Kathleen Renata (nee Grube) Evans.
His distinguished career as an Osteopathic Physician and Psychiatrist spanned more than 50 years. He earned his BS from Case Western Reserve Univ., his DO from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine; Diplomat American Board Psychiatry, interned at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital, Tulsa. He practiced general medicine in Norwalk, OH, did his residency at Embreeville State Hospital, Coatesville. He was a fellow of Psychiatry at Philadelphia Mental health Clinic. He was a supervisory psychiatrist at Wernersville State Hospital.
George honorably served his country earning the rank of Captain in the United States Navy Medical Corps. He remained in the Naval Reserves working at Lebanon Veterans Administration Hospital. He ended his extensive career at Phillhaven Psychiatric Hospital, Lebanon. He was a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychiatrists, a member of the American Psychiatric Association, Psychiatric Physicians of PA, Association of Military Surgeons, and Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association. George was a member of the Freemasons attaining the rank of Master Mason.
George's legacy to all who knew him was his passion for life, his quest for knowledge and sharing it with anyone interested, his love of gardening, travel, languages, learning, and most of all family and friends from all over the world endeared him to all.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children and their spouses: George Edward Charles Evans II(Dr. Joan Evans), Claudia Evans Zale(Stanley Zale), Christie Evans Sturges(Carl Sturges Jr.), Stephanie Evans Hemdal(Niklas Hemdal).
There are also twelve grandchildren: Rachel K. and Jessica G. Evans, Hannah L. Zale, Olivia R., and Samuel E. Zale, Courtney E., Carl E. III, Christopher E., and Charles E. Sturges, Anders K., Annika M., and Alina B. Hemdel.
