Dr. Gene Layser

Dr. Gene R Layser, formerly of Wyomissing, passed away on January 18th. Born in Lebanon County on April 7, 1933, he was the son of the late Alvin and Effie Layser.
Gene was pre-deceased by brothers Perry, Ned and Gordon, sisters Marilyn, Mildred Klopp and Barbara Engle. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Derek, husband of Justine and daughter Kristin Page, wife of Robert Wantz. Grandchildren are Alex Page , Alyson Layser, Amanda Layser and Andrew Layser.
Gene was a 1951 graduate of Richland High School and served in the Air Force 1951-1955.
His education includes a BA from Lebanon Valley College and graduate work at Syracuse University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. Gene also obtained an MA from San Diego State, an Ed.S from University of Florida and an Ed.D from the University of Georgia.
Gene was employed at Milton Hershey School as an Asst Director of Placement and Planning and taught at the University of North Florida. In 1975 Gene began teaching in the graduate counseling program at Kutztown University where he served as Dept chair for 22 years.
In 1993 Gene became an active member of the West Lawn United Methodist Church where he served as lay leader, Sunday School teacher, small group leader and provided leadership to the Caring Community.
Memorial Service will be held in West Lawn United Methodist Church, Penn & Woodside Aves. West Lawn, Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 11:00 am. Reverend Jeffrey A. Raffauf will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be held at the convenience of the family in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in West Lawn United Methodist Church Saturday from 10:00-11:00 am. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to West Lawn United Methodist Church 15 Woodside Ave. West Lawn, PA 19609 in memory of Dr. Gene R. Layser.
