Dorothy Tyson

August 3, 1925 — December 5, 2010

Dorothy (Garman) Tyson passed away Dec. 5, 2010, at 4 a.m. at Reading Hospital, where she was a patient for two months after the discovery of severe abdominal infection. Her last days were comforted by the attendance of her loving husband, daughter and best friend. Hospice guided her through her final pain relief.

Dorothy was a daughter of the late Walter and Katie (Himmelberger) Garman, born Aug. 3, 1925, in the same hospital.

She graduated from Sinking Spring High School in 1943, and attended Albright College for several years in the sixties before beginning extensive travel with her husband.

During World War II, she worked at the Reading Air Base, then as a customer representative for the telephone company. Finally, she was a private secretary for Mr. Harry Lee of Stevens and Lee Attorneys prior to marriage.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Samuel E. Tyson; and a daughter, Kathy Davey. The Tysons have been residents of The Highlands at Wyomissing since 2005, having spent most of their 60 years of marriage in Sinking Spring. Kathy lives in Fairfax, Va., and has been a loving wife of Larry Davey, and mother of children: Maria, Peter and Christopher. Additionally, she is survived by a number of cousins and their children.

Dorothy's loves were bridge and travel. She was an excellent bridge player with the very loving support of her friends who helped her despite her legal blindness, although augmented by her remarkable memory. She traveled with Sam throughout the USA, Europe and Japan on his business trips. Cruising in Europe and the Americas was especially appreciated. But a very special part of her vacation time was spent at Lake Wallenpaupak every August for 20 years with dear friends and their families.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Endowment Fund of The Highlands at Wyomissing, 2000 Cambridge Ave., Wyomissing, PA 19610.
