Dorothy Groh

Cornwall - Dorothy "Dottie" A. Groh, 84, passed away at home with family on Saturday, November 28, 2009. Dottie was the devoted wife to Robert A. Groh for 58 years.



She was the daughter of the late Robert D. and Mabel E. (Meck) Bean and was born in Lebanon, PA.


Dottie was one of 8 children including Grace M. Werner, widow of Alton, Winter Park, FL, the late Roy J. Bean, husband of Mabel, Wernersville, Anna Mae Werner, widow of Earl, Wernersville, Marian Kreamer, wife of Donald, Lafayette Hill, Robert E. Bean, husband of Connie, Reading, Gerald H. Bean widower of Miriam, Hershey, and Frederick Bean, who died early in childhood.



Dottie is survived by her three children, John L. Groh, II, husband of Karen Groh, Robert A. Groh, Jr. husband of Kathy Kopecky-Groh, and Charles H. Groh. She has six grandchildren, Brett A. Groh, R. Alexander Groh, III, Nicole M. Groh, John R. Groh, Joshua C. Groh and Sarah K. Groh and was affectionately called Nana Banana.



Dottie graduated from Annville High School in 1943 and continued her education at Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1948 proudly receiving the Florence Nightingale Award.



Dottie began her nursing career at the Lebanon Sanatorium where she eventually met her future husband. Throughout her career she took care of thousands of patients from the Lebanon County area and prided herself on visiting every patient in the hospital everyday to make sure they were well cared for. Working with her husband, the Lebanon Sanatorium doubled in size and became Lebanon Valley General Hospital. Dottie retired from the hospital in 1980.



Dottie enjoyed traveling to many countries including Russia, France, Israel and China. She spent the last 40 summers at the family's summer home in Old Forge, NY. Dottie liked to read, especially autobiographies but her favorite activity was spending time with her family.



Dottie was a very active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry. She also served on the Advisory Board of the Vo-Tech school in Lebanon, the Visiting Nurse Association Board of Lebanon County and the Advisory Board Oakview Nursing Home in Lebanon.



In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church at the above address or Lebanon Catholic School, 1400 Chestnut Street, Lebanon, PA.
