Dorothy Gehman

October 29, 1922 — February 15, 2010

Dorothy E. Gehman, 87, Shillington, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, in the Reading Hospital.
She was the wife of David H. Gehman, who passed away on Aug. 18, 1990.
Born in Schuylkill Haven, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Webber) Bomberger.
Dorothy always had a passion for learning, especially God's Word. She graduated from Shillington High School in 1940 and later attended National Bible Institute (New York City) in 1943 and Gordon College in 1944. She earned her BA at Kutztown State College in 1969.
In Dorothy's early years, she worked for her father's business, Bomberger's Construction, and worked in the office at the Shillington Heights Lumber Yard. She later worked at the Bank of PA and at the original Shillington Farmer's Market. From 1969 to 1979, she taught fourth grade at Denver Elementary School, then worked a few years at Dolphin Corp.
Dorothy treasured her family and friends and enjoyed entertaining everyone in her home. She loved music, singing, and playing the violin and piano.
Dorothy's greatest desire was to serve the Lord. She was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Congregational Church for 84 years. She taught Sunday school for over 60 years, organized Sweetheart Banquets for 10 years and organized bus trips for the St. Luke's 50 Plus group for 20 years.
Her most cherished memories were during the 25 years when she and her husband did chalk programs for various churches, civic groups, schools and organizations. While her husband drew a picture with chalk, Dorothy read stories, poems or Scripture and played music that all pertained to the picture being drawn.
Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Mary Jo (Gehman), wife of George Rhoads Sr., of Shillington; and five grandchildren: David Littlefield of Sinking Spring, Julie Littlefield of Glenside, Jacqueline Casolare, wife of William Obendorf, of Portage, Mich., Mary Casolare, fiancee of Brayton Bigelow, of Annapolis, Md., and Charles Casolare of Lancaster. There is also one stepgrandchild, George Rhoads Jr., husband of Selma; two great-grandchildren, Justin Littlefield and Brittany Littlefield; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Janet (Gehman) Casolare Owens; son-in-law, Charles Casolare; and sisters, Grace Blankenbiller and Joyce Fix.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke's Evangelical Congregational Church, 315 West Broad Street, Shillington, PA 19607.
