Doris Schrack

July 18, 1930 — September 28, 2008

Doris E. Schrack, 78, of Reading, passed away peacefully in her residence on Sunday, September 28, 2008. Born in Bern Twp., she was the daughter of the late Earl and Esther (Speck) Schaeffer.

A native of Berks County, she lived within a ten-mile radius most of her life, with the exception of a four year period in San Diego while her husband was in the Navy. She was very proud of her heritage, devoting countless hours to the Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society, studying her genealogy and reading and studying the geography, history, and people of the area. Her research proved that she was a direct descendent of John Schaeffer, who founded New Schaefferstown in 1830.

She first worked as a Life Saver Girl and Cashier in People's Drug Store in Reading in the late 40's, and later worked for ten years at Tom Sturgis Pretzels and nineteen years for the VF Corporation, where she retired in 2006. Between these jobs she worked to take care of her family.

She was the widow of the late John Schrack, who passed away in 2000, as well as a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Doris is survived by two sons: Theodore Baer, husband of Marcia Baer, Bernville, and David Baer, husband of Polly Dinkel, San Francisco, CA, sons of the late Carl Baer; and a daughter: Karen Conklin, Scranton, daughter of the late Michael Martin.

Other survivors include five granddaughters: Nicole Baer, Baltimore, MD, Tiffany Stuber, wife of Eric Stuber, Baltimore, Elizabeth Baer, Bernville, and Fahtimah and Zaynab Abdelaziem, Scranton; and one grandson: Brandon Baer, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.

She is also survived by sisters: Mildred Bond, wife of Lewis Bond, Sunbury, Trudy Nagle, widow of Charles Nagle, Honeybrook, and Barbara Varone, wife of Gilbert Varone, Reading; brothers: Michael Schaeffer, widower of Rozella Schaeffer of Assaria, KS, George Schaeffer, husband of Jane Schaeffer of Leesport, and Joel Schaeffer, husband of Arlene Schaeffer, Mohnton, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Tulpehocken Settlement Historical Society, 116 N. Front St., Womelsdorf, PA 19567.
