After a battle with cancer, Donald R. Yerger Sr. (83) died Sunday morning August 30th, at his home with his family in Laureldale, PA. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris Yerger and sons Deane and wife Diane of Reading, Donald Jr. and wife Mary of Sherrills Ford, NC, and Dennis and wife Michelle of Oley. Donald attended Alsace Lutheran church where he served on several committees, church council and a variety of volunteer work. But he will be most remembered for his smiling face that greeted everyone on Sunday morning.
He served in the US Navy from 1949 - 1953 were he was stationed aboard the USS Gyatt and USS LST 542 during the Korean War. Donald also worked and retired as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service. He later worked and retired from Reading Electric.
Donald is also survived by his grandchildren Timothy, Derek, Bryan, Joshua, Jared, Gina, and Alyssa (Yerger) Holston and husband Calvin, and two great-grandchildren Roman and Solomon. Sisters Joyce Bair, June Raihl, and Jane Kerns also survive him. He was preceded in death by his mother Ethel (Good) Yerger; brother Charles (Dick) Yerger, sisters Jean Hunsberger, Joan Fletcher, and Judy Nester.
Donald's true passion was his involvement with and dedication to youth baseball where he truly touched the lives of many young men. For twenty years he was a fiery assistant coach with the Muhlenberg A's until his health forced him from the sidelines. He then moved to the press box announcing games, running the scoreboard and occasionally belting out an off-key version of "Take me out to the ballgame" over the PA system. He ended his involvement with the A's and the Muhlenberg Jr. High baseball teams at age 82 - after 45 years of service.
Funeral Service will be held in Bean Funeral Home, North 16th & Rockland Streets, Hampden Heights, Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 1:00 pm. Reverend Richard A.
