Denton V. Mays, 90, of Phoebe Berks Village and formerly of West Lawn, passed away July 6, 2010 at 11:29 AM in Reading Hospital & Medical Center where he was a patient since June 25th. He was the husband of Ethel M. (McComsey) Mays for 64 years on July 4th. Born in Cedar Top on September 18, 1919, he was the son of the late William V. and Stella M. (Bezler) Mays.
Mr. Mays served in the U.S. Army during World War II and upon discharge was employed as a deliveryman for Abbott's Dairy. Denton founded Mays Sandwich Shop in West Lawn in 1947 where he continued to work part time after selling the business to his son. He was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church, American Legion Post # 635, Shillington and the Adamstown VFW.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 4 sons Richard L. Mays husband of Dianne M. (Dolan) Mays of Middleboro, MA; Robert A. Mays husband of Stephanie E. (Reiner) Mays; Dennis L. Mays husband of Joyce E. (Burket) Mays and William E. Mays husband of Karen L. (Miller) Mays all of Sinking Spring; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a sister E. Myrtle (Mays) widow of Franklin J. Schlouch of Phoebe Berks and a sister in law Nancy F. (Stuber) Mays of Reading. He was predeceased by a daughter Dietra A. Mays on February 27, 2006 and a brother George W. Mays.
