Daniel Tannenbaum

Daniel Tannenbaum, 85, of Lower Alsace Twp., passed away December 16, 2010 at 2:07 PM in his residence. He was the husband of Shoshana E. (Harrison) Tannenbaum who passed away March 3, 2010. Born in New York City on September 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Morris and Sarah (Gornitz) Tannenbaum.
He is survived by a son Marc H. Tannenbaum husband of Karen M. Tannenbaum of Charlotte, NC and a daughter Miriam B. (Tannenbaum) wife of Edward Castrege of Aldan, PA. He was predeceased by 2 sisters Miriam Tannenbaum and Frieda Messer and a brother George Tanney.
Mr. Tannenbaum served as a Petty Officer in the US Navy during World War 2. He graduated from Syracuse University and received a Masters Degree in Social Work from Ohio State University. He worked at the Jewish Community Center in Columbus, Ohio, and later worked as a Program Director at Jewish Community Centers in Allentown, PA and Poughkeepsie, NY; prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center in New Bedford, MA. He served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Community Center in Rockford, Illinois from 1974 until 1981 before coming to Reading, where he served as the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Reading from 1982 until retiring in 1994. He served as the Coordinator of the Holocaust Resource Center at Albright College from 1994 until his passing.
Mr. Tannenbaum was a Past President of the Reading Rotary Club, a Board Member and former Chairman of the Board of B'nai B'rith Apartments, a member of the Pennsylvania Holocaust Education Council and a Board Member of the Jewish Federation. He was a member of Kesher Zion Synagogue.
