Dr. Craig H. Johnson, M.D., F.A.C.S., 77, of Shillington, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Heritage of Green Hills.
Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Auni I. (Olson) and Herbert C. Johnson, M.D. Craig was the beloved husband of Susan L. (Schoch) Johnson, with whom he shared 10 ½ wonderful years of marriage.
A 1965 graduate of Reading High School, Craig continued his education at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1969. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1973. Craig was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Babcock Surgical Society and was honored with the Faculty Prize and Huber Anatomy Award.
Craig completed his surgical internship at Reading Hospital and Medical Center before pursuing his residency in neurological surgery at Temple University Hospital. After completing his residency in 1978, he began his career as a neurosurgeon at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where he dedicated 37 years to providing exceptional care. Renowned for his expertise and compassionate approach, he earned the deep respect of both his colleagues and patients.
Beyond his profession, Craig was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with his friends and sons. He had a deep appreciation for luxury automobiles, taking great joy in their craftsmanship and performance. He had a keen eye for fine writing instruments, as reflected in his extensive pen collection. Craig also enjoyed spending time with his wife, Susan, at their place in Baywood, Longneck, DE, where they created many wonderful memories together.
In addition to his loving wife, Susan, Craig is survived by his sons, Christopher Johnson (Lynsey) of Lancaster and Keith Johnson (Shawn) of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his stepsons, Steven Hafer (Jill) of Leesport, Mark Hafer (Jessi) of Webster, NY, and Greg Hafer (Danny) of Ypsilanti, MI. He was a cherished grandfather to Evan, Luke, Cassidy, Drew, and Declan and is also survived by his sister, Cynthia Texter (David) of Wyomissing.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 7:00 PM at Bean Funeral Home, 129 E. Lancaster Avenue, Shillington. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on the same day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Craig’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
