Charles Smith

Charles E. Smith, 78, of Reading, passed away April 9, 2009 at 5:03 am in Berkshire Center. He was the husband of Margaret J. "Peggy"(Rickenbach) Smith. Born in Paxions, PA he was the son of the late George I. and Ida M. (Schlegel) Smith. Mr. Smith was an electrician for the Reading School District for 28 1/2 years retiring in 1993. He was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, a member of the Men's and Senior Choir at church and served on the Church Council for 15 years. He was also a member of Northmont Fire Company; Excelsior Club; Life member of Goodwill Fire Company; Life member of Marion Fire Company; Member of Temple Fire Company. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Mark C. husband of Sharon L. Smith of Reading and a daughter Marcia A. (Smith) wife of Jon J. Murphy of Exeter Township. He is also survived by his grandchildren Dean A. Smith, Derek C. Smith, Katelyn J. Murphy and Erin R. Murphy. Also surviving are his brothers Robert E. husband of Joyce Smith of Reading, John A. husband of Lydia Smith of Muhlenberg Township and his sister Anna(Smith) Seidel of West Lawn. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son Rick A. Smith in 1999 who was the husband of Vicki Rothenberger of Muhlenberg Township. He was also preceded in death by a brother William G. Smith and a sister Katherine Hill.
