Charles William Matchett, 88, of Reading, PA passed peacefully in his home on September 11, 2022. Born on February 15, 1934 in Reading PA, he was the only child of the late Sterling W. and Alma Matchett.
Charlie was a loving husband and supportive, energetic father as well as a generous and much-loved grandfather. In his professional life he was known and loved by many as “Dr. Charles Matchett” but always “Charlie” to his friends and family. For over 45 years, he was devoted to his dental practice, touching many lives and creating many happy smiles. Charlie loved meeting new people and contributing to their lives and the community. He also kept tabs on his numerous grandchildren and shined with pride over their accomplishments.
Charlie is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, June (Cook) Matchett. Together their blended family included 8 children: Scott Matchett of Flying Hills, PA; Julie (Matchett) Keller (married to Tom) of Mohnton, PA; Curt Matchett (married to Wendy Worrell Matchett) of Lancaster, PA; Jeff Stewart (married to JoAnn) of Attleboro, MA; Jill NaomiRussell of Santa Cruz, CA; Sandy (Stewart) Gesang (married to Elliot) of Graham, WA; John Bradley Stewart of CA and Sally (Stewart) Zeller of Shillington, PA. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen (Weldie) Matchett, mother of Scott, Julie and Curt. Additionally, there are 14 grandchildren: Jessica Keller; Chloe and Ginger Matchett; Ross and Jane Stewart; Ryan, Abby, Miriam, Joanna and Natalie Zeller; Emily and David Stewart; Colvin Marshall and Michael Gesang. And 3 great-grandchildren: Ethan, Aiden and Anya Gesang. Charlie grew to become quite the cat lover and was devoted to all his furry friends. He will be sorely missed by his two dear kitties, Shelby and Flora.
Charles attended Ursinus College and The University of Pennsylvania Dental College, graduating in 1957. He then served in the US Army in Germany before returning to PA and building his successful dental practice, serving his local community for many years. Once retired he never slowed down, but rather continued to stay busy by sharing his time and expertise as a valued volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the Animal Rescue League and tutoring children. Charlie had numerous passions which included President of Berks County Dental Association and President of the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club. Charles was a Certified Professional Ski Instructor of America for over 20 years and served on the Ski Patrol at Sharp Mountain and Heidelberg ski areas.
Both avid travelers, Charlie and June enjoyed a variety of trips both stateside and abroad. Together they collected beautiful artwork from intriguing destinations which they proudly displayed in their magnificent home, Eaglewald. Charlie also regularly explored the Northwest Territories camping, canoeing and fishing with like-minded buddies and sons. He was a true outdoorsman. At home he stayed busy gardening, maintaining their mountain property, fountain and koi pond and tinkering with various projects.
Charlie and June were the hosts with the most, graciously entertaining family and friends with their frequent lively house and pool parties at Eaglewald, including the annual Kentucky Derby Party.
Another beloved family tradition for more than 20 years was the annual summer week at “the shore” in Stone Harbor, NJ where the entire family created life-long memories of beach walks, bocce, swimming, fishing, nights around the dinner table laughing and playing games, Fourth of July Fireworks over the ocean, Springer’s Ice Cream, cousin shenanigans and more.
The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to all the wonderful caregivers from The Heritage of Green Hills (Nicole warmed Charlie’s heart and brightened his everyday), Compassus Hospice of Berks County and The Visiting Angels Wyomissing for their compassionate and expert personal care which allowed Charlie to remain at home where he wanted to be.
