Carl Kern

Carl E. Kern, 80, of Cumru Township, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 9:45 am in Reading Hospital. He was a Loving Husband to Kay R. (Fisher) Kern. Born in Reading, Mr. Kern was the son of the late Walter and Ethel (Wertz) Kern. He was a member of Ephrata Community Church and served in the United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Army National Guard as a Military Police Officer serving during the Korean and Vietnam Eras. Mr. Kern was a Police Officer for Lower Heidelberg Township; was employed as a detective for Conrail and retired from Conrail as an employee in the maintenance department. In addition to his wife , Mr. Kern was a Loving Father to Linda K. Breitenstein, wife of David A. Breitenstein of Mohnton, Teresa L. Naples, wife of David C. Naples of Morgantown and Carl O. Kern, husband of Cathy R. Kern of Elkhart, Indiana. He was a Loving grandfather to Samuel, Tyler, Adam, Chase, Courtney and Cole and a Loving great grandfather to Lexus. Also surviving are his sisters Barbara Edleman of Temple and Miriam "Dodie" Herman of Manheim along with his dog and best friend Diego.
Memorial Service will be held in Bean Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 129 East Lancaster Ave. Shillington, Monday, October 10, 2016 at 3:00 pm. Pastor Mark Kraybill will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery privately by the family. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday 2:00 to 3:00 pm.
