Betty Marie (Kern) Seltzer, 87, passed from this earth on March 26, 2024. The daughter of the late Catherine Clark (Boyd) Kern and Stephen H. Kern. She was the beloved wife of Donald Seltzer and celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Betty graduated from Gov. Mifflin in 1955, where she was a member of the band’s color guard, sang
in the three-member group known as the “Mellotones,” and was selected for the May Court her senior year. She spent her life living in the Gov. Mifflin School District and organized her class’s reunions and combined reunions of GM and Shillington High School classes.
She continued her love for singing by being involved with the “Sundowners” singing group. She was a member of the Shillington Junior Women’s Club and the Berks County Secretarial Society. Betty was an Admin. Asst. to the managers at Shillington Savings & Loan, sold Avon products, Beeline Clothing and World Book Encyclopedias. She was a “Lunch Mom” in the Gov. Mifflin School District. She was president of the Cumru Rec Board for eight years and was a lifetime member of the Mohnton Fish & Game. Betty was proud to play a role in upholding our democracy by volunteering her time assisting with various duties for local and state political campaigns.
Betty was known as “Mrs. Coach” throughout her husband’s coaching career providing team dinners at their home, making meals at running camps, baking celebratory cakes and taking movies and photos. She thought of those boys as her own.
She is survived by two daughters: Kimberly (Seltzer), wife of John Cave of Robesonia, and Whitney Seltzer of Sinking Spring; two granddaughters: Jessica (Cave), wife of Greg Eckman, and Nicole (Cave), wife of Benjamin Eveler; and three great-grandchildren: Marley and Ryder Eckman, and Easton Eveler.
Betty enjoyed being a housewife and loved devoting her time raising two daughters which included attending their sporting events and school activities. She spoiled several English setter dogs over a span of three decades. As “Nana,” she was delighted with her grandchildren and enjoyed participating in their lives. Those close to Betty knew that she took great pleasure in keeping her house clean, preparing good meals for family and friends, and dressing her and her daughters fashionably. She spent time antiquing to find unique treasures for her home.
She was preceded in death by her five siblings: Ruth (Kern) Oulds, Eugene Kern, Geraldine (Kern) Hoyer, Robert Kern and Joyce (Kern) Wagner.
