Betty Gromis

Betty Jane (Nein) Gromis, 82, of Phoebe Village died September 6, 2010 at 1:35 AM in her residence after a brief illness. Born in Reading on December 20, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Robert K. and Emma V. (Fischer) Nein.

She was the wife of Robert W. Gromis who survives her. They were married on February 25, 1950 and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Betty was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School and a 1949 graduate of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked as a nurse at the Reading Hospital. She was then a nurse for several years at the Women's Clinic. Subsequent to that, she was a nurse for Dr. Ralph Barry at the Children's Clinic, retiring from nursing in 1973.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Cynthia J., wife of Dr. Berard N. Avella of Spring Twp.; Gail L., wife of Rodney A. Simmons of Wyomissing; and Judith A., wife of James J. Walsh of Phoenixville. There are six grandchildren: Todd R. Avella, husband of Aimee of Cranford, NJ; Elizabeth L. Simmons of Huntington Beach, CA; Caroline J. Field, wife of Christopher of Philadelphia; Catherine E. Simmons of Wyomissing; Alison R. Walsh, a student at James Madison University; and Christopher R. Walsh at home; and twp great grandchildren: Gavin and Avery Avella. Additionally, Betty is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Wilbur Nein of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; Robert Nein of Lynchburg, VA; Esther (Nein) Hessler of Hollywood, FL; and Margaret (Nein) Lehman of Ocala, FL. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy (Nein) McMahon, and a brother, Lt. Richard Nein, USAF.
